How They Served Their Community

Glady's Porter Zoo Ronald McDonald House Nexstar's Founder’s Day is a special time for KVEO-TV in Brownsville, Texas to serve the community. This year, they picked two locations to achieve their goal: Glady’s Porter Zoo in Brownsville and Ronald McDonald House in McAllen. Twenty-eight employees participated at the two locations over a two-day period, giving a combined 114 hours of community service. The Glady’s Porter Zoo has one of the world's top conservation efforts. The focus is the endangered Kemp Ridley Turtle. The station's efforts involved helping prepare the zoo for their Yappopalooza, an event which gathers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for the protection and preservation of these turtles. Without this effort, the turtles would likely be extinct today. KVEO staff stuffed envelopes, picked up trash, answered phones, and even got close and personal with the zoo animals, including the turtles.
